Evictions and Deprivation in Chicago

Project Summary

This project conducts data analysis to understand the relationship between a deprivation index, constructed using socioeconomic data from a variety of sources, and instances of eviction in the city of Chicago. The python application creates an interactive dashboard which summarizes the relationship between the different factors. Follow the steps below to launch the dashboard.

To Launch the Application

1. Clone the repository.

git clone https://github.com/uchicago-capp122-spring23/30122-project-apwhy

2. Navigate to the repository.

cd ./30122-project-apwhy

3. Download Poetry, which allows the user to run the application in a virtual environment, following these instructions. Then install poetry.

poetry install

4. Activate the virtual environment in poetry.

poetry shell

5. [OPTIONAL] Pull data from APIs and clean it -- this will take about 20 minutes. Note that two of the APIs need keys to access. We recommend requesting API keys from the Chicago Data Portal and Google Maps API to complete this step.

Storing the API keys in a 'constants.py' file in the main deprivation_evictions folder will allow you to run the application without further edits. Paste the API keys in constants.py as follows:

GOOGLE_TOKEN = "Your_Google_Token_Here"
API_TOKEN = "Your_Chicago_Data_Portal_Token_Here"

Then, navigate back to the main folder and run the following to pull data from the APIs and clean it.

cd ./30122-project-apwhy
python3 -m deprivation_evictions.data_bases.clean_data.cleaning_data

6. Launch the Application.

python3 -m deprivation_evictions

The IDE may automatically launch a new web browser tab, or may provide a local URL. If the latter, paste it into your browser to view the interactive dashboard.
