Would be good to update the docs on contributing and maintaining. A few things off the top of my head:

update section on how to run tests locally since the tests run headless osmesa, which requires some extra installation steps.
add/update section on maintenance/release, including how to update minimum/maximum python version (happens in the pre-commit config file!)
