Building an image with ubuntu 22.04 and custom IP fails #872

Hi,
I'm looking for some insight, been hacking at this for a while now and can't quite understand what's going on.

If I specify an IP in the network.pkrvars.hcl file, my build will fail.
I noticed that when I start the build, the template IP that packer is showing me is different than the one i'm specifying in the network.pkvars.hcl file.

Is it possible that packer enables DHCP for the template i'm building but i'm forcing a static IP with the network.pkvars.hcl.
Should that happen after the cloud-init configuration has run?

Packer starts
Packer sends a DHCP request for my template
Template gets a DHCP IP
Cloud-init starts and sets the static IP based on the network,pkvars.hcl
build fails.

I just ran an test on Ubuntu 22.04 and 23.10 with the following in the network.pkrvars.hcl resulting in a successful build.

I'm not getting the same results. I've switched to the latest v0.18.0 as well. I'll report back once I troubleshoot some more. Thanks again!

Sorry for the late post, was out of town for a bit :) I've changed common_data_source from http to disk and it's still just hanging. I should specify that I'm working in an env that has no internet access.

So my current configuration is:
network.pkvars.hcl

vm_ip_address_nic1 = "10.0.0.3"
vm_ip_netmask_nic1 = 24
vm_ip_gateway_nic1 = "10.0.0.1"
vm_dns_list_nic1   = [ "10.0.0.1", "10.0.0.1" ]

The common.pkvars.hcl i've switched to disk as you suggested
common_data_source = "disk"

and the vm is stuck at this prompt:
subiquity/Mirror/cmd-apt-config: curtin command apt-config
Which I think is because the template has no internet access. I've read

I just can't get this to work. It picks up a DHCP address.

Is there an open path from the template on the 192x subnet back to the packer host on the 10x subnet? If not, http will not work and you should toggle to the disk mode in the common vars - noted in the docs.

That will generate an iso and use that for the kickstart vs http.

I noticed that you don't seem to have the working http server like I do. Am I missing something here?

I'm using the disk-based data source from my laptop versus the default http since due to my isolated lab - the template can't reach back to my Packer host using http protocol.

So your template can reach out to internet then? In my isolated network, the template vm i'm building has no internet access. I was doing some reading about cloud-config and it looks like you can add

apt:
    fallback: offline-install

I've been trying many things but I can't understand how it's all working together. whew.
