It took me a while to figure this out so I thought I would record it somewhere to hopefully save other people some time. The "--cov" option will disable the pycharm debugger. To enable the debugger either remove this flag in pyproject.toml file or add the "--no-cov" option to your pycharm's pytest run configuration.
