@JennyYennyful @attali-david do you think we still need this ancient ticket? I don't even remember fully what this is about, and I wrote it... and if neither of you can understand the ticket either, then I can go ahead and close it. |
For the Crimson text font, we can embed the font via Google fonts https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Crimson+Text I did some research on the Proxima Nova Font that you wanted for the project. What I found is that it needs to be installed in the project and then it has to be loaded manually. Unless you have something like an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription set up. Here are some links to download the font. It has a free-to-use license for personal projects. Unsure how it would apply to non-profit organizations https://freefontsfamily.com/proxima-nova-font-family-free-download/ https://www.dfonts.org/fonts/proxima-nova-font/ https://www.fontspring.com/fonts/mark-simonson-studio/proxima-nova https://www.allfreefonts.co/proxima-nova-font-family/ Here’s the Designer who created the Font, Mark Simpson. And where you can get the original Proxima font from https://www.marksimonson.com/fonts/view/proxima-nova If we want to use the font inside Open Austin’s website, we would either have to be subscribed to Adobe’s creative cloud service, or we would need to buy a commercial license. The current cost is very high for a commercial license from Mark Simpson’s website, and other websites require payment to use it for non-personal projects. We could also look into free alternatives. Here’s a picture of a list of alternatives to Proxima Nova that we could try. Most of these fonts are already inside Google Fonts and can easily be added to the project. |
@tjdev7 Thanks for researching this! |

Asking for feedback: curious what folks this about using this font for headings (Crimson Text):
PR: #1
Deployed: https://website-v2-git-add-fonts-open-austin-vercel.vercel.app/
lianilychee (Open Austin prez / Ad Hoc product)
ah yes! I'd forgotten that you'd mentioned this PR before
In the interest of having you feel successful and contributing, I'd say go ahead and merge
However, are we not able to use Proxima Nova? That is org font <-- but I also don't feel like dying on the fonts hill
Dan
We could use Proxima Nova. Just looking for feedback on this font specifically. I think it adds a nice element, but open to alternatives/critiques.

I'm laser focused on going live then iterating, so as long as it's not wingdings, idc 😬
What do you mean "adds a nice element?"
Dan
like a little bit more flair
I’ll stick with your previous comment and just merge it — totally agree it’s not something we need to be super opinionated about right now
