Figure and table captions are suppressed in 'standalone' documents

I'm writing my dissertation in chapters, each chapter has its own .tex.

One of the ways to manage this is using the 'standalone' package, and setting the doc class of each subfile to
\documentclass[class=report,12pt,crop=false]{standalone}

This allows compiling the chapters individually so that I don't have to wait for the whole document to compile.
However in standalone documents (not in documentclass[12pt]{report}) the captions on figures and tables are suppressed.

I'm going to try and find a way around this, but if you could fix that would be lovely.
