Look again at preprocess steps for speed:

try defining box (aka slice) grid in a way that snail can quickly split gridfinder lines and GPPD powerplants to boxes
try raster reproject/mask operation to get population with targets; or snail slice target geoms - whether zonal-statistics or polygons-from-raster is slower?

Changes to output:

split transmission lines on country boundaries, record "interconnector" nodes in a way that it's possible to remove/disable those connections from the network
clip transmission lines to box/slice boundary, with artificial connection nodes on edge recorded in connector .json output
