Engineer statement when asked what tool would be useful, "connectedpapers like mindmap. You input “aerodynamics” and see a map of biological systems that have shown success dealing with that. Also show the different structures used. Organize the map by evolutionary tree. See if similar structures emerge on different branches at different times. Locate common patterns. Ability to compare structures."

The four components that make up a biological strategy are:

  1. Organism
  2. Function (what it does)
  3. Mechanism (how it does it)
  4. Context

We are interested in developing a prototype of a component explorer visualization to help explore these components and their relationships to answer questions like:

  • How many unique organisms have evolved the same or similar mechanisms to accomplish a particular function within a particular context?
  • What are the most common mechanisms nature uses for a particular function in a particular context?
