From a UX perspective, it feels wrong to me that you need to click "save" in the metadata editor all time long while working in it. Instead, it would feel more appropriate to me, if the metadata editor would save automatically after every change.
There should be an undo button with a drop-down to choose one or more actions to undo, like known from word processors.
For text fields, they should receive a bold focus when they contain unsaved changes (that is, on the first keystroke) along with a very tiny button with a check mark, that you can click to save the change of text, and an X button to cancel them; else they should persist automatically when they loose focus. All other changes could persist immediately.
