Any thoughts about how this would work, or do you have a basic idea on implementation of this feature?

I think images could just be attachments added to the page doc itself,
this may involve adding some rewrites so you can reference them easily
using a relative path. You should be able to reference externally
hosted images using the current code.

It would be great if we could also embed videos, not sure how to
accommodate that in a flavour of Markdown that doesn't allow embedded
HTML.
