ldapjs (https://github.com/joyent/node-ldapjs) seems abandoned and misses some crucial fixes. However there's ldapts (https://github.com/ldapts/ldapts), a fork of ldapjs which is well maintained. Probably we should switch to ldapts. This could probably help with #18 aswell.
