When I try to import a volcano plot as an svg file into Adobe Illustrator it does not bring the actual dots for the genes. Everything else is fine (any gene labels, axis labels, background grid, etc.). The only relevant error message that appears in Illustrator is "an unknown problem occurred." Any advice? Thanks!

Actually, just found them! Had to release clipping mask in Illustrator (ungrouping was not enough) to reveal. Though the dots do come in a different location (not on the grid).
