It turns out the generic image of shoes is not one-size-fits-all enough for everybody. Ideally, it would be editable from the content editor.
Workaround:
Change the static image on heroku. This particular image is called 'header.jpg' and is in the app/assets/images/static directory, 751 wide x 417 high (pixels).
This workaround requires, git, the heroku toolbelt and the ability to successfully push to heroku (ssh key, etc). So, it's not an "easy" workaround for anybody that used the heroku button to deploy.
