It would probably be more compatible with various devices (Windows-PCs in particular) to offer an (uncompressed) ".zip"-file instead of, or in addition to, a ".tar"-file.
Yeah, windows offers .zip by default and .tar only if the user has some better archiver installed, like 7-zip or so.
I personally mostly use linux and from a format / developer perspective, tar is superior in some aspects, but they are maybe not that important here (read the zip specification, it clearly shows its age and its DOS roots).
