Precipitation (nowcast) dataset 🌧

This dataset contains precipitation nowcast for Norway and allows you to compare a physical-based NWP model with a fully data-driven model based on advecting radar reflectivities. The variable is 1 hour precipitation accumulation and the forecast lead times are 1h, 2h, ..., 6h. The time period is May 2022 - August 31 2022. Data is available for 202 observations point locations in Norway. Forecasts have initialization time 00Z, 06Z, 12Z, and 18Z. Only deterministic forecasts are available in the files. The dataset is published on Zenodo at https://zenodo.org/record/7992033.

Prediction systems
Two prediction systems are provided:

• NWP.nc contains forecasts for the MetCoOp ensemble prediction system, which is the operational limited area model used by MET Norway, SMHI, and FMI. The grid spacing of the model is 2.5 km and a single ensemble member is provided (the ensemble control run).
• RADAR.nc contains a fully data-driven forecast, using a radar image as the starting state, and optical flow (based on the two most recent images) to advect the precipitation forward in time. Additionally, a spatial smoothing filter is applied where the size of the smoothing filter increases linearly with leadtime.
