Hi Everyone,

Thanks for a great second session this afternoon. Thank you to Devan and Anna for teaching us about team culture, psychological safety, and diving deeper into the Pathway doc! Below is a light digest of Call 2, including a reminder for your Seaside Chat and additional Co-Working time before our Call 3. Looking forward to seeing you then!

Have a good week,
Nick & the rest of the Mentor + Instruction Team

Digest: Cohort Call 2 [ 2023-SWRCB ]
Cohort SharePoint Folder - contains agendas, slides, recordings and the Pathway template
Cohort Webpage
Link to Pathway Template
Water Boards' Openscapes Teams Channel - connect with all Openscapse Champions cohorts at the Water Board

Goals: We discussed team culture and took a deeper dive into the Pathway.

Task for next time:

  1. Have a second Seaside Chat and work on your Pathway:

Accept our invite to join a team within the Openscapes Organization:
You should have received an invite on Monday morning from GitHub asking you to join our cohort GitHub Repository in the Openscapes GitHub organization. Make sure you accept before the next Cohort Call!

Upcoming OPTIONAL Cohort Co-working Session: Thur., April 18th, 1:30-2:30 pm.
This is a time to come work on your own things, but also be able to talk things through and screenshare to get help from others.

Slide Decks:

A few lines from shared notes in the Agenda doc:
Some things folks have done or seen on a team to make it psychologically safe include:

  • Ok to make mistakes and improve on it (+1), it’s especially powerful to see higher-rank managers admitting to have made mistakes and fostering a culture of “that’s ok.”
  • People can have some “crazy” ideas to start with, and it can spark very innovative discussion in the group. Need to make people feel comfortable to bring up those “crazy” ideas. +1 +1+1+1
  • Take space and make space. +1+1+1+1+1+1
  • Our physical response to stress is clearly noticeable and affects our mind/body. (+1+1)
  • No one has all the answers, we are all trying to figure out this thing called life. +1 +1+1+1

Many teams are just beginning the process for developing their pathways and have offered this advice:

  • Think big and start small. +1+1
  • Try to explore both cultural side (feels easy but takes work) and business side (e.g., reproducibility) of the pathway.
  • Need a parking lot tab if it doesn’t immediately belong to one of the tags currently in the pathway document.
  • Some people are willing to share their ideas immediately, encourage everyone to contribute.
