The culprit is in https://github.com/OpenRailwayMap/OpenRailwayMap-CartoCSS/blob/master/standard_labels.mss#L49

The old code shows them as "bold", too (https://github.com/OpenRailwayMap/OpenRailwayMap/blob/master/styles/standard.mapcss#L747), but it's actually not. Stations also use "bold", but additionally "Arial Black" as font to actually get them bold. I remember testing in that are, the bold marking on both was likely to fix some sort of rendering glitches.
