This feature request is related to Issue #624 but follows the approach outlined in:

https://wes.copernicus.org/preprints/wes-2023-133/

A note in pull request #638 provides helpful detail: #638 (comment)

As in #624 the overall plan is to build the framework in v4.0 and implement in v4.1
