Adjust padding based on state?

Hello again! I have a button which appears to expand when hovered over as compared to the "normal" state. However, it only does this on one side (it's a tab in a menu that pops out on hovering). Ideally, I'd like the text to follow the tab so that it pops out with it by adjusting the padding depending on the state. Is this possible?
