Welcome to my website! I'm a student of theology and mathematics with versatile teaching experience. You'll find here posts and links related to these topics. This site reflects my own perspective and not necessarily that of my employer.
I consider myself a Christian, with some qualifications and caveats, and am interested in Christian theology at a personal level. A couple years ago I completed the Master of Arts in Theological Studies program at Briercrest Seminary after several years of part-time study. That seminary experience helped me to read more widely and explore the foundations of my own faith and perspective, beyond the bounds of my own church upbringing.
Along the way I've become interested in a style of theology that draws upon our experiences as foundational. I wrote a masters thesis on an experiential approach to faith and theology contained in the philosophy of Paul K. Moser. Since then, I've worked with Moser to gather archival writings on the theme of experience in theology, many of which are available at my other website: Archive for Experiential Theology. We also co-edited three books along these lines, Atonement and Experience: Writings of James Denney, God of Holy Love: Essays of Peter Taylor Forsyth, and God in Experience: Essays of Hugh Ross Mackintosh. These books represent some of the best instincts in theology that I've come across so far and I hope they do some small measure of good in the world.
On this site I share some of my own writing on theological topics. I have an old podcast, The Undisputedly Pauline Podcast, where I share some of my sermons and conversations I've had with friends. I also co-host The Experiential Theology Podcast with Juan Torres.
I am also a PhD candidate in mathematics at the Royal Military College at the "all-but-dissertation" phase. My program has included graduate courses on algebra, combinatorics, number theory, representation theory, and machine learning. I began my PhD program interested in the octonion algebra and possible connections to the standard model of particle physics. My interests have wandered slightly along the way, but I still hope to find a connection between the physics that we actually have and exceptional or sporadic structures in combinatorics.
Some of my specific interests include the quaternions, octonions, exceptional Jordan and Lie algebras, lattices, t-designs, block designs, Steiner systems, codes, algebras constructed from code loops, and systems of equiangular lines. I plan to share some math related notes on this site. I've also included slides from a couple math related colloquia that I've delivered at the Royal Military College in recent years.
I've spent most of my career as a student or as a teacher. I have been a physics student and I've taught university physics. I've been a military student pilot and I've been a military flight instructor. I've been in the seminary classroom and I've taught in church settings. I'm committed to life-long learning and enjoy opportunities to share what I know or what I'm learning.
In the university context, I've taught physics of the space environment, classical mechanics, basic optics, basic algebra, modern physics, and quantum mechanics. I plan to share some of my notes on these topics here from time to time. I also plan to share some thoughts on teaching in general, technology in learning, and the audio of any future theology talks I have a chance to give.
